The Golden Globes is considered the official kick off of the film and television Awards Season. Known as the “Hollywood’s Biggest Party,” this cool kid event sets the tone for countless soirées, red carpet catwalks and publicity junkets in the weeks that follow. Every year, the buzz of the actual awards is outshined by the looks worn by Tinseltown’s biggest stars, and if this year’s Globes, held on January 11, was any indication, it is going to be a very sparkly season!
While the women gave us plenty to gush over, the breathless coverage that followed the night was, in large part, directed at the men, specifically their lapels. Colman Domingo stole the spotlight in multiple ivy brooches by Boucheron, while Patrick Schwarzenegger donned an elaborately detailed Dolce & Gabbana brooch that was reportedly enhanced by the addition of a Bee pin once belonging to the matriarch of red carpet arrivals, Joan Rivers. Other sartorial standouts went to Michael B. Jordan, Hudson Williams, John M. Chu, Snoop Dogg and Benny Blanco, to name just a few.

Those of us who are immersed in the land of antique, vintage and estate jewelry couldn’t be more thrilled by this moment. We’ve long believed that “men’s jewelry” is whatever piece(s) of jewelry a man decides to wear, and we’re delighted that stylish men are choosing an item of adornment that dates back to the Bronze Age, helping to cast this niche category in a brand new light and, frankly, causing us to re-think the placement of these jewels on our ever-expanding wish lists.

Our U.S. Antique Show events always give us plenty of brooches to covet. Looking at our archives from the past few events alone, we have ample options we’d love red carpet stars of any gender to consider for future events. Brooches make a bold statement without saying a word, so whether wanting to express spiritual beliefs, convey a love of the animal kingdom or a little bit of whimsy, or showcase a bit of other-era flair, positioned on lapels or creatively set into an updo, brooches speak volumes beyond those well-rehearsed smizes.
