Passion is the driving force behind the Jogani brand. Its founder, Anup Jogani, has spent the last 15 years combing the globe on a perpetual hunt for the most sublime diamonds and gemstones in the world. In his relentless search, he has attended and exhibited at countless trade shows, he’s scoured the deepest recesses of pawn shops, he’s formed lasting relationships with world-renown estate dealers, and he’s attended the most prestigious auctions in the world. Lovingly restored and reimagined, the gems he uncovers obtain new life in Anup’s hands, all while he maintains a reverence for the traditional and ancient techniques of jewelry design.
U.S. Antique Shows: What does a typical day look like for you now?
Anup Jogani: A typical day starts with a nice long walk early in the morning while talking to suppliers and customers. Then I get to the office and discuss the needs of our clients for the day with my associate, Lauren (Lenny). We send out a few consignments. I continue to chat with suppliers (since finding a treasure is the most important thing!). Talking to our workshops and gem cutters usually rounds out the next part of the day. We’re constantly photographing and emailing clients as well. Then some lovely accounting and shipping. We end the day by talking about design and marketing!
U.S. Antique Shows: What are you looking forward to most when we’re in the “after” of COVID-19?
AJ: Travel and the shows!!! They’re a huge part of our business.
U.S. Antique Shows: Tell us about the first piece of jewelry or antique that you fell in love with.
AJ: The first piece of jewelry that I fell in love with was a 1.87 vivid yellow old euro in a gorgeous Edwardian ring that I bought from a little pawnshop in Agoura Hills, California. When I submitted it to the GIA, they told me it was one of the most saturated gems they had ever seen.
U.S. Antique Shows: What designer/brand/time period are you most excited to work with?
AJ: Art Deco Cartier, modern Hemmerle, ancient, and fine Renaissance pieces.
U.S. Antique Shows: Do you feel you should have been born in another time period? If so, which one and why?
AJ: I’m a nerd, I like the future. If it was back in time, then the Roaring Twenties. But mostly I want to move forward as far as possible.
U.S. Antique Shows: What is the one piece that got away?
AJ: It was a carved Medusa emerald in a Sotheby’s auction in Geneva. I should’ve bought it, would’ve bought it. I was in a funny mood that day. It was one of the most special pieces of art I had ever seen.
U.S.Antique Shows: What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone who wants to cultivate an antique collection?
AJ: Go with your heart. Don’t buy something because someone tells you to, or you think it’s right. Your heart will tell you everything. Also read books on the subject. There’s a lot of knowledge in them.
