Based in Los Angeles, Geller & Company is a third generation estate jeweler with a distinctive eye for exceptional pieces that appeal to both serious collectors and casual jewelry lovers alike. The GIA-certified third generation of the company, Laurie Geller, has an enviable sense of personal style (not to mention a consistently incredible nail game!), that is seemingly infused into every one of the company’s acquisitions. This, coupled with her quick wit, laid back demeanor and astonishing sense of humor render her stand at trade shows, as well as her prolific Instagram account, imperative reference points for what stylish women everywhere should be wearing right now.
While her family has been in the estate jewelry business since 1945, growing up, Laurie wasn’t particularly interested in jewelry. She loved fashion, but her exposure to jewelry was limited to the classic pieces her father would get for her and her identical twin sister for birthdays and other special occasions, such as strands of pearls and small diamond stud earrings. After college, Laurie joined her dad at trade shows to help out for a bit while she decided what to do with her life. Being fully immersed in the trade at her family’s stand, she began learning more about jewelry, and the more she learned, the more she wanted to know. Therein began her self-described “obsession” with jewelry that continues to fuel her quest for knowledge and her ever-expanding curiosity about the art form.
The genuine love the Laurie has for every piece in Geller & Company’s inventory is palpable, and her unique ability to “romance” each piece is unprecedented. She is not only adept at providing detailed provenance of a piece of jewelry, information about materials used and the quality of the stones or diamond cuts, she can also place the work into a larger historical context. Based on verifiable facts, she’s able to speculate on who originally purchased the piece, who wore it, and how well it was loved. For Laurie, looking at a piece of jewelry through her loop and seeing signs of natural “wear and tear” only adds to the complexity of its beauty; in Laurie’s estimation, knowing somebody 100 years ago wore something every day reveals a personal connection to a piece that enhances its value. And then, a lot of times, she’ll acquire pieces for the company’s offerings simply because they’re cool.
